Pink Basket for Basketclub

This month’s @_basketclub_ ðŸª¡ brief is so appealing to me that I wanted to make two baskets (this one and the banana)!

For this one, I wanted to play with a larger scale of 3D embroidery to maximize the visibility of the stitch details. This basket is 3D modelled and 3D printed and then embroidered with needlepoint stitches using pink neon rope.

For the form, I wanted to do something with crisp edges and a playful shape that takes advantage of 3D printed capabilities. I did a few prototypes but landed here as the wavy edge creates interesting highlights and shadows on the repeating stitches. I also wanted to experiment with leaving more of the printed form visible, to allow the colour of the filament to interact with and enhance the colour of the rope.

Above are some images of the process. I 3D modelled the form and test printed several sections of different profiles to find the one that worked best with these stitches at this scale. I played with filament colours and rope colours to find the right combination. I then worked on the final piece, occasionally having to undo and re-stitch sections as I figured out the cleanest details and transitions. I’m happy with the vibrancy and playfulness of the result!

I think this piece could be a fun entryway bowl or fruit bowl, or it could be displayed on a shelf or on a wall as a playful geometric textured shape.

Now I want to explore more fun shapes and large stitches!
