Hidden Patterns plays with the standards of architectural drawings and features the patterns that are used to represent different materials. This drawing is a full scale architectural section detail of the foundation of a home, showing the area where the basement, ground floor, and exterior wall meet. This detail was chosen as it features many of the hatch patterns that have been Laura's favourites since learning them in interior design school. The diagonal stripes represent brick, the triangles are concrete, the X shapes are lumber, and the squiggle is insulation. The patterns are modified slightly to allow for offsets between pre-cut holes which are necessary for stitching. The large scale embroidery is primarily backstitch, but also includes a couching stitch and French knots.
This piece was exhibited as part the Artifacts exhibition during the 2024 DesignTO Festival. The exhibition featured eight textile artists from across North America to explore themes of architecture and memory through fibre art.
